Gender And Sexuality Reflection Paper - 1898 Words

In the first reflection essay that I wrote for this class, I explained that while I have had a few classes on gender and sexuality, this class has really helped me further my understanding of the topics and has opened my eyes to many other topics and ideas that previous classes were not able to cover. This class really helped me understand other cultures views on gender and sexuality and how not all cultures view gender and sexuality as we do. One idea that I was able to really see and understand is what different cultures expect of males and the traditional gender roles and stereotypes that a lot of males have to deal with. Some of the main roles and stereotypes that males are pushed into include being fertile and having children, being†¦show more content†¦He has tried many different medications and a major operation to try and increase his fertility, but so far he has not been able to have a child with his wife (Wentzell Inhorn 2011: 316). He is worried that he and his w ife will end up experiencing â€Å"the stigma of childlessness† (Wentzell Inhorn 2011: 317). Along with the ability to reproduce, a man’s virility is seen as a large part of his masculinity. Wentzell and Inhorn wrote about a 68-year-old Mexican man who became depressed and suicidal after he had to have his cancerous penis amputated (Wentzell Inhorn 2011: 307). The man claimed that â€Å"without my penis, I feel that now I’m not a man† and even though he already had many children, not being able to continue having sex makes him unmanly (Wentzell Inhorn 2011: 307). In Mexico, men are seen as wanting to dominate and have sex with all women and possibly lower-status men that are available (Wentzell Inhorn 2011: 309). The 68-year-old barber Pepe wants to be seen as vigorous and having a lot of sex so he uses Viagra and has sexual relationships with women other than his wife (Wentzell Inhorn 2011: 311). The 40-year-old construction worker Josà © believes that his erectile dysfunction was partially caused by his inability to have successful dating experie nces, a successful marriage, or be successful at work (Wentzell Inhorn 2011: 314).
